The Assam Congress on Thursday lodged a complaint with Guwahati Police over controversial AI-generated videos shared by the BJP Assam unit on its official X handle, alleging that the clips were fabricated with the intent to provoke communal tensions.
DCP (Guwahati East) Mrinal Deka confirmed that the complaint had been received at the Dispur police station. He said the matter was under inquiry, but clarified that no FIR had been registered yet.
The complaint followed a video uploaded late Monday from the ‘BJP Assam Pradesh’ handle. The video, captioned “Assam without BJP,” featured a series of AI-generated visuals. These included images of a man in a skull cap cutting meat on the roadside with the label “beef legalization”; Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and senior leader Rahul Gandhi pictured before a Pakistan flag; and multiple scenes of men in skull caps and women in burqas or hijabs appearing in tea gardens, at the airport, in an amusement park, at a Guwahati stadium, near the Ahom-era Rang Ghar monument, and even crossing a border fence, Indian Express reported.
The video, titled “illegal immigrants,” concludes with the text “90% Muslim population” and a message urging viewers to “choose your vote carefully.” The clip sparked a controversy, prompting Assam Pradesh Congress Committee media department chairman Bedabrata Bora to file a complaint at the Dispur police station on Thursday.
In his complaint, Bora alleged that the video was framed and narrated in a way that deliberately promoted fear and animosity against Muslims. He said it implied that a non-BJP government would result in so-called “Islamic dominance” and the subjugation of Hindus and indigenous communities.
According to him, the video distorted India’s constitutional values and the secular policies of a democratically elected government, portraying them as anti-Hindu conspiracies. He further argued that by using inflammatory language and visuals — including depictions of Rang Ghar and Guwahati Airport being overshadowed by Muslim figures — the content went beyond routine political rhetoric and amounted to a calculated attempt to incite political discord.
The complaint also claimed that the video distorted Gaurav Gogoi’s religion and personal beliefs for political advantage, saying this had hurt his sentiments as well as those of Hindu Congress workers across Assam.
It called for an FIR under provisions related to abetment, promoting enmity between different groups, deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings, criminal intimidation, statement conducing to public mischief, and imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration. It also requested directions for the video to be removed from X.
The post triggered criticism from the BJP’s political rivals at the national level. In response, the BJP defended the video, describing it as a depiction of demographic changes in Assam and what it called the threat posed by illegal immigration.
