Keonjhar: Following clashes that broke out between two communities, over a Ram Navam procession a day ago, internet services were suspended on Tuesday in Odisha's Keonjhar district.
Prohibitory orders that had earlier been imposed, were extended for a further 24 hours in Joda town where skirmishes had occurred, PTI quoted a senior official as saying.
"Prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC were first imposed on Monday evening till 10 am on Tuesday in view of the clashes. It was extended later by 24 hours to avoid mass gathering. Internet services have been suspended to prevent rumour-mongering," said the district official.
The prohibitory orders resulting in all banking operations and mineral transportation coming to a halt. That also caused rows of trucks being stranded on the thoroughfares.
A bid to pacify the situation was made by senior officials, including Keonjhar superintendent of police,who held a meeting with leaders of both the communities in the morning, the official said.
Security was tightened in view of the situation. Police deployed 17 platoons, each comprising 30 personnel, in the area to bring the law order situation under control.
On Monday, despite police denying permission, a group of people had taken out a Ram Navami procession in the town. The procession was reportedly intercepted en route by members of another community, ensuing in clashes ensued between the two sides, leaving eight people injured.
Several vehicles were damaged in the melee.
