Calcutta HC orders CBI to take over Bogtui killings

Calcutta: The Calcutta High Court, taking suo moto cognizance of the Bogtui killings where eight people were charred to death, ordered a CBI inquiry into the incident. The autopsy of the victims said that they were subjected to brutal thrashing before were being burnt to death.

The court also directed the Special Investigation Team, set up by the state government, to hand over case papers and arrested people to CBI and asked the Central agency expedite the investigation.

The opposition parties in West Bengal accused the Trinamool Congress government of suppressing facts. Congress leader Adhir Chowdhary alleged that several bodies are still missing and the Chief Minister wants some elements that led to the incident shall not come out.

Visiting the families of the victim at Bogtui, the CM Mamata Banerjee announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of the kin of the victims and job for a member from the CM's quota. She also asked Director General of Police (DGP) Manoj Malaviya to start raids all over the state to recover illegal arms and ammunition.

After local residents complained to CM that local Trinamool Congress block president Anarul Hussain had hatched the conspiracy to set the houses ablaze, she ordered the DGP to arrest him.
