Bombay HC dismisses Kangana Ranaut's plea against Javed Akhtar's complaint

The Bombay High Court has dismissed the plea filed by Kangana Ranaut in the criminal defamation case filed by lyricist Javed Akhtar. Kangana had sought to quash the proceedings initiated against her.

Kangana Ranaut's counsel Rizwan Siddiquee had argued that the defamation proceedings initiated by the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate's court had failed to apply its mind to the case.

Javed Akhtar's counsel Jay Bharadwaj told the Bombay High Court that the magistrate had ordered the police inquiry after going through his complaint and Kangana Ranaut's interview in which she made the alleged defamatory comments.

Lyricist Akhtar filed the complaint in November 2020 after Kangana Ranaut allegedly made defamatory and baseless comments against him in a television interview given to journalist Arnab Goswami. In December 2020, the court directed the Juhu police to conduct an inquiry.

The police initiated criminal proceedings against Kangana Ranaut and issued a summons to her in February 2021.

Justice Revati Mohite Dere of the High Court had reserved the order on September 1 and said today that the applicant's petition "stands dismissed".
