Gen Z protest reels at Jantar Mantar provoke political backlash from ruling party

During recent student protests led by the youth-backed Cockroach Janta Party at New Delhi's Jantar Mantar, Gen Z activists flooded social media platforms with sarcastic memes, satirical reels, and creative posters demanding accountability from ruling Bharatiya Janata Party ministers. The movement stood out as one of the most prominent displays of youth dissent in recent years, demonstrating that the younger demographic could challenge the administration using dark humor, viral online content, and digital street culture alongside traditional protest slogans.

The satirical social media handle "Cockroach is Back," representing the CJP, actively leveraged its online reach to post biting commentaries and videos calling for political accountability. Following a late-night video address by Prime Minister Narendra Modi concerning public unrest over examination irregularities, the account posted sarcastic responses mocking the government's priorities. CJP also circulated compiled videos highlighting previous executive assurances against paper leak mafias, pointing out what they characterized as unfulfilled promises to the nation's youth. Throughout the demonstrations, the group repeatedly accused ruling party workers of attempting to disrupt the peaceful dharna at Jantar Mantar.

The unconventional style and tone of the youth movement sparked strong political friction, drawing sharp criticism from BJP leaders. Actor and BJP Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut reacted strongly on social media, describing the protesters' viral reels as jarring, crass, and uncomfortable to watch. In a series of Instagram posts, Ranaut questioned the upbringing and language of the participating students, asking who was raising them and criticizing their self-adoption of the "cockroach" moniker. She further expressed her frustration outside Parliament, condemning the use of abusive language against senior leaders and questioning whether the protesting students were taking their academic and professional responsibilities seriously.

In response to the MP's remarks, Cockroach Janta Party chief spokesperson Saurav Das dismissed her criticism, asserting that neither the younger generation nor her own political party takes her statements seriously. Das argued that Gen Z activists have contributed significantly to democratic discourse and restoring public faith in Indian democracy—contributions he claimed the BJP MP had failed to match. He added that politicians should maintain respect for the youth who are standing up for their constitutional rights and institutional transparency rather than resorting to personal attacks.
