West Bengal: BJP MLA Tanmay Ghosh from Bishnupur has joined the Trinamool Congress. He joined the party on Monday in the presence of TMC leader Bratya Basu. "BJP advocates political vengeance. They are using central agencies to usurp the rights of the people of West Bengal. I urge all politicians to support Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the welfare of the people," Ghosh said, targeting the BJP-ruled Centre shortly after joining the TMC.
The Trinamool Congress claimed that Ghosh was inspired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's development work for the people of West Bengal. "Inspired by @MamataOfficial's developmental work for the people of #Bengal, @BJP4Bengal MLA from Bishnupur Shri Tanmay Ghosh joined the Trinamool family today in the presence of Shri @basu_bratya We extend a very warm welcome to him!," TMC tweeted from its official account.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the TMC won 213 of the 294 seats. The BJP had hoped for a close fight but could not reach even three digits. However, they managed to increase the number of legislators from three in 2016 to seventy-seven in 2021. Before the election, former BJP president Amit Shah's party had claimed they would win 200 seats.
