Patna: Maganoo Singh, one of the 19 accused in the lynching of Muslim woman Roshan Khatoon, was welcomed with celebratory slogans and garlanding after being released on bail, triggering widespread outrage.
“Maganoo Singh Zindabad” slogans echoed through villages in Bihar’s Madhubani district as Singh returned home. Locals and family members greeted him with garlands, colours, and firecrackers, lighting up the night sky.
Singh is the only accused so far to have been arrested in connection with the case involving 19 individuals.
The incident had shocked the region, occurring during the month of Ramzan. On February 28, Roshan Khatoon had approached the village head seeking help in a local dispute. Singh, who is the son of the village head, along with his associates, allegedly assaulted her, tied her to a pole, and continued the brutal attack.
According to allegations, when the severely injured Khatoon pleaded for water, she was forced to drink water mixed with urine and alcohol.
A video of the incident had gone viral on social media, sparking public outrage.
Khatoon succumbed to her injuries on March 1 at the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH).
The case has since drawn attention over both the brutality of the attack and the celebrations following the accused’s release on bail.
