Patna: A man who allegedly duped people by posing as an IAS officer and claiming to be an undercover agent working under National Security Adviser Ajit Doval has been arrested in Bihar. Manish Gupta was taken into custody from Jamalpur in Khagaria district by Gogri police.
Khagaria SP Bhanu Pratap Singh said Gupta had allegedly carried out fraud and deception in different parts of Bihar while impersonating an IAS officer. Acting on confidential information, police searched his residence and seized several high-value items.
During questioning, Gupta produced a Central Vigilance Commission card and an identity card identifying him as an IAS officer. Preliminary verification found both documents to be fake. Investigators also found no truth in his claim of working as an undercover agent under Doval.
Police suspect Gupta used the forged IAS credentials to conduct fraudulent activities in Khagaria and elsewhere. Authorities are examining the ownership and acquisition of the vehicles recovered from his residence, along with his financial transactions and the sources of his assets. The Economic Offences Unit of Bihar Police may also assist in the investigation.
Among the seized items were a Tesla with Full Self-Driving capability and a Tata Safari. The Tesla reportedly carried a board identifying it as belonging to the Government of India.
Police also recovered more than 31 litres of imported foreign liquor, a large quantity of beer, five iPhones, 20 credit cards, eight debit cards and four cheque books. Two horns suspected to belong to barasingha deer were also found, potentially attracting action under the Wildlife Protection Act.
