Attack on Pak prison housing Imran Khan foiled, 3 arrested

Rawalpindi: Pakistan’s Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and the police on Thursday night have detained three terrorists foiling an attack on Central Jail Adiala housing former PM Imran Khan, NDTV reported citing Dawn.

A spokesperson for the Rawalpindi police said that intercepting a potential assault on the jail, authorities have detained ‘three terrorists who belong to Afghanistan.’

A cache of heavy weapons and ammunition has been recovered from the suspects and they were relocated to undisclosed locations for further investigation, according to Dawn.

‘Along with heavy weapons and ammunition, police officials claim to have found them among the terrorists who were captured and later relocated to sites that are not publicly known,’ police officials were quoted as saying.

‘Recovered items included automatic heavy weapons, hand grenades, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and detailed maps of the jail premises,’ CPO Syed Khalid Hamdani was quoted as saying.

The law enforcement agencies are currently carrying out a search operation in and around the jail.

Central Jail Adiala, overcrowded with inmates twice its capacity, houses former Prime Minister and PTI leader Imran Khan, and former Foreign Minister and ex-Chief Minister of Punjab.

The foiled attack on the prison highlights the persistent threat that Pakistan faces from terrorists in the country.
