Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who met a delegation of Muslim representatives concerning the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), assured that his government would not make any decisions that would hurt the sentiments of minorities.
He emphasized the importance of accommodating suggestions from the Muslim community and urged them to contribute their valuable input to the proposed UCC. CM Jagan also clarified that the Union Government had not yet presented a draft bill on the UCC, and thus its exact contents were unknown.
The Chief Minister expressed his concern about false propaganda surrounding the UCC's impact on the rights of Muslim women. He urged religious heads and elders to dispel such misconceptions and unequivocally uphold Muslim women's rights.
The UCC, if implemented, would replace several existing personal laws, including the Hindu Marriage Act, Muslim Personal Law, and Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act, among others. The proposed code has been a long-standing promise of the BJP since 1996. However, some minority communities are concerned that the UCC could be used to target them.
Meanwhile, in response to the UCC issue, a delegation of Muslim community leaders and religious heads also met with the opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief, Chandrababu Naidu. Naidu reassured them of his party's support and commitment to safeguarding the interests of the Muslim community.
He pledged to back their opinions and advocate for their rights in Parliament, vowing that the TDP would thoroughly research the proposed law and uphold the aspirations of the Muslim community.
