Andaman & Nicobar MP alerts Lt. Governor of cyclone Asani

Port Blair: Andaman Nicobar Islands are under the shadow of the impending Asani, the first cyclone of the year, which is building over the Bay of Bengal. MP Kuldeep Rai from the islands has requested Lieutenant Governor Admiral (Retd.) DK Joshi alerting the country's disaster management system, PTI reported.

Rai further requested the island administrator to declare a holiday on March 19 and 21 for all educational institutions within the Union Territory, while 20th is already a holiday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast said that the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal would become well-marked by March 20 morning and turn into a cyclonic storm on March 21.

It advised the fishermen not to go into the seas of the Bay of Bengal as well as Andaman during the said period.

MP Rai further requested in his letter to the Lt.Governor to suspend all tourist activities in the islands from March 19 to 22. The disaster management machinery must be alerted, and there should be sufficient deployment of related officials in the islands to effective management of situations. The people should be made aware of the impending situation through efficient dissemination of information, he wrote.
