Monsoon likely to reach Kerala in 2-3 days, IMD issues multi-hazard warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said conditions are favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala in the next two to three days and issued a multi-hazard warning for several parts of the country for thunderstorms, hailstorms, and heavy rainfall over the coming week.

According to the IMD, the monsoon is expected to advance further into parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the Bay of Bengal in the coming days.

Very heavy rainfall is forecast over Kerala and Mahe from June 3 to June 7.

Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected over Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Lakshadweep during the period.

Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep are likely to receive widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Similar weather conditions are expected over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Odisha over the next several days.

In the Northeast, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh between June 1 and June 7. Assam and Meghalaya are expected to receive heavy rainfall from June 4 to June 7, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may witness heavy rain on June 1, 6, and 7.

Konkan, Goa, Maharashtra, and Gujarat are likely to experience scattered rainfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds during the week. Light to moderate rainfall is also expected over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha.

The IMD said Maharashtra is likely to see a 2-3 degrees Celsius drop in daytime temperatures through June 5, while Gujarat may record a 2-4 degrees Celsius decline between June 3 and June 7.

Meanwhile, temperatures across many parts of Northwest India are expected to rise gradually by 4-6 degrees Celsius during the week. East India may see temperatures increase by 2-3 degrees Celsius before stabilising.
