Hailakandi (Assam): Police arrested a person in the Hailakandi district of Assam under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for allegedly supporting the Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal's murder in Rajasthan, PTI reported.
A native of the Katlicherra area, Samsul Laskar, was the one arrested for his alleged support for the tailor's murder through a comment on a social media post. The arrest, made on Thursday, was based on a complaint filed by Hailakandi Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha president Milan Das. In addition to UAPA, other IPC sections were also charged on Laskar.
Laskar had commented on a post by a person named Abu Choudhury, who demanded capital punishment for Lal's murderers.
Police had lodged cases against those who organized a protest march in Gurgaon, demanding action against the killers of Kanhaiya Lal, after footage from the march featured protesters raising abusive slogans against Muslims, NDTV reported.
Saying that the case was taken for promoting enmity between groups, police informed that the protest rally was organized by Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal on Wednesday.
The protest march was conducted at the Kamala Nehru Park at around 5 pm, and approximately 50 people took part in it. Footage shows people wearing saffron shawls and turbans, raising provocative slogans against Muslims and burning 'Islamic Jihad terrorism' effigy.
Two men, identified as Riaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad, allegedly hacked Kanhaiya Lal to death with a cleaver at his shop in Udaipur on June 28 and posted videos online saying they were avenging an insult to Islam. They were arrested, and the case was transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), PTI reported.
