After govt flags obscene content, X takes down posts, deletes accounts

Social media platform X has taken down around 3,500 posts and removed nearly 600 accounts after receiving directions from the Indian government over the circulation of obscene content, government sources told NDTV.

According to the report, the company has conveyed to authorities that it will comply with Indian regulations and take steps to curb the spread of such material on its platform.

The action follows a notice issued last week by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, which flagged the presence of explicit content on X and asked the platform to submit a compliance report within 72 hours.

The ministry had raised concerns over the alleged misuse of X’s artificial intelligence tools, including Grok and xAI, for creating or circulating obscene images and videos involving women, TNIE reported.

The government had cautioned that non-compliance could invite stringent legal action under multiple Indian laws, such as the Information Technology Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Indecent Representation of Women Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

It also directed the platform to reassess its technical systems and governance mechanisms, strengthen enforcement of user policies, and suspend or permanently remove accounts found violating the rules.

The ministry, in its communication, indicated that the situation pointed to serious lapses in platform safeguards and enforcement, describing it as a significant misuse of AI technologies in contravention of existing laws.

In response, X reportedly removed the identified content and accounts and assured the government that it would tighten enforcement measures to prevent similar violations in the future.
