Guwahati: During his two-day visit to Assam, Home Minister Amit Shah exuded confidence about lifting the contentious Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from across the state.
Hinting at its likely repeal, Amit Shah said the Act had been in force since 1990 after having been extended seven times since.
Shah claimed that militant outfits were signing peace deals with the state government, causing sharp decline in insurgency in Assam according to the Indian Express.
Shah hoped the day was not far off when there would not even be one insurgent outfit in Assam.
He was speaking at the ceremony to present the President's Colour honour to the Assam Police in Guwahati when he touched on the Act.
Amit Shah said the Act had been lifted from 23 districts of the state as a result of the law and order in the state after eight years of Modi in power.
Praising the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led state government, Amit Shah said the youths in state would get Vikas and bright future.
AFSPA, which lends near-unbridled powers to the security forces, was revoked from parts of the Northeast earlier this year.
Amit Shah said the state police had been successful in stopping cross-border infiltration, cow-smuggling and rhino poaching.
Assam is the tenth state in the country to receive the President's Colour, the highest honour given to any military or police unit in recognition of exceptional service rendered to the nation, both in peace and wartime, the report said.
