New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Monday booked six students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), including three office-bearers of the students' union, a day after a violent clash between students and police.
The confrontation occurred during a protest march to the Vasant Kunj (North) police station, which left several people injured. Those bound down by police include JNUSU president Nitish Kumar, vice-president Manisha, general secretary Munteha Fatima, and students Manikant Patel, Briti Kar, and Saurya Majumdar.
A senior police officer explained that being "bound down" legally requires the students to appear before the investigating officer when summoned and to inform the police if they plan to leave the city. An FIR has also been registered against them at the Vasant Kunj (North) Police Station.
In addition, 28 other students were detained under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act and later released after undergoing medical examination.
According to police, six personnel were injured when students allegedly broke barricades and obstructed traffic on Nelson Mandela Marg.
The protest march was organised by Left-affiliated student groups, including the All India Students Association (AISA) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI). The students demanded an FIR against Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members, alleging that the RSS-backed group had attacked Left-leaning students during a recent general body meeting on campus.
Student organisations accused police of resorting to a "brutal assault" to disperse the protesters. The JNU Teachers’ Association condemned the action, calling it “disproportionate and politically motivated.” It also raised concerns over the detention of women students “after 7 pm” and urged the university administration to safeguard the institution’s “tradition of democratic student politics.”
Police, however, denied the allegations, asserting that their measures were necessary to maintain order and prevent further escalation.
