Facial recognition system (FRS) vans deployed during the CJP protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi identified 2,873 people with criminal records through real-time facial recognition, according to a document tabled in Parliament.
Of the total, 2,402 individuals were identified through the Crime-Kundli database, while another 471 were matched against Dossier records, taking the total number of identified persons to 2,873.
The document categorised the identified individuals across a range of criminal offences. It said 101 people were linked to murder cases, 62 to attempt-to-murder cases and 284 to offences related to dacoity and robbery.
It further stated that 61 individuals were identified in connection with rape cases, while six were linked to offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Another 25 people were categorised under cases involving molestation of women.
According to the figures presented, 229 individuals were identified in Arms Act cases, 135 in snatching cases, 19 in kidnapping-related cases and 67 in cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The largest category comprised 1,884 individuals classified under “Other IPC/BNS and Special Laws”, covering cases registered under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other special legislation.
The document said the identifications were made through FRS vans deployed during the CJP protest at Jantar Mantar. However, it did not specify whether the facial recognition matches led to arrests, preventive action or further investigation. It also did not elaborate on the criteria used to classify the identified individuals.
