2020 Delhi riots: court denies bail to accused charged with UAPA

New Delhi: Observing that the person was part of "conspiratorial meetings" that incited the 2020 north-east Delhi riots, a Delhi court denied bail to an accused, who was booked under UAPA, The Indian Express (TIE) reported.

On Thursday, the court also observed that the accused, Saleem Malik, was one of the organisers of the Chand Bagh protest site where an inflammatory speech was given.

Denying the accused bail, the court of Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat said even if Malik was not part of any WhatsApp groups, which are under probe, the charge sheet states that he took part in the conspiracy that sparked the riots.

The court said that Saleem Malik was there in northeast Delhi when the riots broke out. "The role of these accused persons and others also has to be considered while understanding the role of the present applicant/accused," TIE quoted the court.

It added that studying the charge sheet as well as the other documents submitted for bail, the court ended up on the opinion that allegations against Malik alias Munna were prima facie true.
