New Delhi: In the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots case, the Supreme Court on Friday asked that the Delhi High Court speedily consider Sharjeel Imam's bail request.
Imam was charged with riot-related offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). In Delhi, rioting broke out during demonstrations against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), resulting in 53 fatalities and more than 700 injured.
Imam has been in prison for more than four years after being arrested in January 2020 while he was in his last year of a PhD program in modern history at JNU, Indian Express reported.
According to the Indian Penal Code, Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act, Arms Act, and the UAPA, Imam and others are accused of engaging in a prearranged plot to instigate rioting in northeast Delhi between February 23, 2020, and February 25, 2020.
