1 yr since Hathras gang rape, Priyanka demands speedy justice to victim's family

Lucknow: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has expressed concern over the delay in justice to the Hathras rape victim who died exactly a year ago.

It's been exactly one year since the incident, but instead of justice, the victim's family is receiving death threats, said Priyanka Gandhi in her tweet.

she said that the victim was denied a proper cremation, and claimed that the entire state apparatus was involved in slandering the girl's reputation.

"How can one even expect sensitivity from a government that is not concerned about women's security and safety? The anti-women mentality of the chief minister who has said 'women should not be given freedom' is known to everyone," she tweeted.

The 19-year-old Dalit girl from Hathras village in Uttar Pradesh was brutally assaulted by four upper-caste men, succumbed to injuries in Delhi's Safdarjang Hospital in the early hours of September 14. The girl who went to collect animal fodder from a field with her mother was allegedly gang-raped, and later strangulated and dragged with her dupatta. She died two weeks later in a Delhi hospital. After her death, the victim was forcibly cremated by the police without the consent of her family -- a claim later denied by the police.
