Hyderabad: The Telangana State Commission for Women on Tuesday issued a summons to actor Sivaji over his alleged derogatory comments on women, directing him to appear before the Commission at 11 a.m. on December 27.
The Commission registered a suo motu case against the actor for remarks made during the promotional event of his upcoming movie Dhandora on Monday. The statement is considered derogatory to women in general, and particularly to women of Telangana.
“Having found prima facie that you made such a statement deliberately with an intention to defame women in society, the Commission has taken suo motu cognisance and decided to conduct an enquiry under Section 16 (1) (b) of the Telangana Women’s Commission Act-1998,” said the Commission secretary.
Sivaji has been directed to appear personally before the Commission, bringing any relevant material or documents and to cooperate with the inquiry.
The controversy arose when Sivaji remarked during the Dhandora promotional event that women look most beautiful in traditional attire and that a woman’s beauty is enhanced by wearing a saree. He added that while people might compliment someone’s appearance, they might secretly judge or curse individuals for not dressing more modestly.
Following criticism from various quarters, Sivaji on Tuesday issued an apology in a video statement, saying he used “a couple of unparliamentary words” while trying to make a positive point. He clarified that his comments were not about all women, but specifically about actresses, suggesting they dress cautiously while going out to avoid problems.
“It was not intended to insult anyone, but two unparliamentary words have been uttered, for which I sincerely apologise,” Sivaji said. He added that he has immense respect for women and intended to emphasise that women should be given respect and opportunities, particularly in a society where they are often looked down upon.
