Producer Ronnie Screwvala has hinted at a possible re-release of Shah Rukh Khan's acclaimed film Swades.
Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, the 2004 film significantly impacted Indian cinema with its unique storytelling and narrative style. Featuring Shah Rukh Khan and debut actress Gayatri Joshi, Swades enjoys an 8.2/10 rating on IMDb and has been lauded as a film ahead of its time.
Screwvala believes it's time for the movie to make a comeback in theaters.
In a conversation with India Today, Screwvala discussed the recent success of film re-releases like Lakshya and Rockstar. He emphasized that Swades deserves a second run in theaters due to its timeless and inspirational story. He noted that Swades has an evergreen appeal that continues to resonate with audiences, particularly the younger generation.
The movie's plot, where Shah Rukh Khan plays a NASA scientist returning to India to bring electricity to a rural village, remains relevant today. Screwvala mentioned that the film's message about returning to one's roots and contributing to the country still connects with many.
Screwvala, who renamed his foundation to the Swades Foundation after the film's release, believes that re-releases shouldn't be viewed merely as a business strategy to fill theater seats. Instead, he sees them as opportunities to reintroduce influential stories to new audiences. He cited Lakshya as an example, highlighting how its inspirational plot encouraged many to join the army.
Screwvala argued that India, like the United States, should leverage its cinema as a form of soft power. He stressed that films capable of influencing and inspiring the youth should be given a chance to return to theaters. For Screwvala, the re-release of films like Swades is more about cultural gratification than financial gain.
