Actor Saira Banu paid an emotional tribute to her late husband, legendary actor Dilip Kumar, on his death anniversary, remembering him as the "steadfast anchor" of her life and saying she remains grateful for the years they shared together.
Sharing a series of photographs on Instagram on July 7, Saira reflected on the enduring nature of memories and described them as "faithful companions" that keep loved ones alive.
Recalling Dilip Kumar's passing on July 7, 2021, she wrote that his death left an irreplaceable void not only for her but also for his family, friends, admirers, and the film industry.
"For me, he was far more than the man the world celebrated. He was the steadfast anchor of my life, the quiet strength upon which I leaned," she wrote.
Saira said their relationship was "not merely a life lived together, but a life fulfilled," and remembered Dilip Kumar as a compassionate human being, philanthropist, and loyal friend in addition to being one of Indian cinema's greatest actors.
Reflecting on their life together, she said she had unknowingly become part of a legacy that generations would continue to celebrate. She added that although years had passed since his death, he remained present in her life through her memories.
"If I have been fortunate in this lifetime, it is because I was granted the immeasurable honour of loving, and being loved by, Dilip Kumar. And that is a blessing for which my soul shall remain grateful until we meet again," she concluded.
Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu married in 1966. During their marriage, the actor entered into a second marriage with Asma Rehman, a decision he later described as a grave mistake. In his autobiography, The Substance and the Shadow, he wrote that he could never forgive himself for the hurt he caused Saira Banu and acknowledged that she stood by him after he admitted his mistake. The couple later reconciled and remained together until Dilip Kumar's death in 2021.
