Netflix is banking on one of the most popular and intriguing characters of the hit show Money Heist. Berlin, played by Pedro Alonso, is getting a spin-off show and the studio just dropped the first teaser.
Money Heist Berlin will be an origin story of the character and follow the iconic jewel thief Andrés de Fonollosa. He will be carrying out a series of heists across Europe with a crew audience hasn't seen before. In the original show, he is the terminally ill, narcissist, second-in-command, and brother of the crew's leader The Professor.
He is also a racist and misogynist as acknowledged by actor Alonso in the Netflix documentary Money Heist: The Phenomenon. Berlin’s popularity had baffled the actor, and he asserted that the character is in the shades of a villain. The spin-off is likely to dive deep into what makes Berlin interesting.
The plot is set before the events of the original show. Franchise creator Álex Pina is returning to co-write the eight-episode show. Berlin will be released in December 2023.
The teaser shows a much younger-looking Berlin standing in front of the model of a building. He is placing paper models of a getaway car, decoys, and security personnel in what appears to be the planning stage of a heist. He is also seen picking up a red gem and looking at it. However, he is also paying attention to the cutout paper model of a mysterious-looking woman. The original show has established him as someone who enjoys being in love.
During Netflix's Tudum event in 2022, Pina said the spin-off show is going to be a trip throughout the golden years of Berlin when he was stealing all over Europe and madly in love.
His crew was unveiled earlier by Netflix - Damián, a philanthropic professor played by Tristán Ulloa; tech wiz Keila played by Michelle Jenner; Cameron, an unhinged character played by Begoña Vargas; Roi, a determined character played by Julio Peña; and Bruce, an action hero played by Joel Sánchez.
