Kochi: A Christian senior priest in Kerala criticized the trending "Illuminati song" from the recently released Malayalam film Aavesham, pointing out that Illuminatis are a group that worked to undermine the church. Bishop Joseph Kariyil also criticized other 2024 superhits in the Malayalam industry, such as "Premalu" and "Manjummel Boys", besides "Aavesham", claiming that all three promote alcoholism.
Speaking at a programme organized by the church for children in Kerala's Kochi, Fr Kariyil said that the films, which are widely promoted, are undermining societal values.
Bishop said that many are unaware that Illuminate was an organization that opposed the church's beliefs. He also condemned "Aavesham" movie's frequent portrayal of bar scenes, violence and fights. Children are so absorbed in the song that they always sing this song if they are asked to.
Then he turned to "Premalu" and came down on it for depicting violence and drinking.
Asianet news reported that Syro-Malabar Church took a firm stance on Kerala's new liquor policy, which has eliminated dry days and extended bar hours. The church reacted by saying that the new policy was a betrayal of the people. Syro-Malabar Sabha had stated that promoting alcohol under the pretext of tourism development was deeply concerning.
Bishop Kariyil backed the church in this case and argued that the mentioned films promoted alcoholism and are exacerbating the drinking issue in the state.
The song "Illuminati "was sung by Dabzee, composed by Sushin Shyam and written by Vinayak Sasikumar. The movie and the song, starring Fahad Fazil, have become a fast hit in theatres and social media.
