AR Rahman is not a friendly person, says singer Sonu Nigam

Sonu Nigam, who has collaborated with music maestro AR Rahman on films like Daud, Dil Se, and Taal, recently shed light on Rahman’s unique personality and his approach to work.

In an interview with O2 India, Nigam described Rahman as someone who prioritises professionalism and maintains a certain distance in personal interactions.

Recalling his first experience working with Rahman on Daud, Sonu was struck by the composer’s unconventional style. Unlike most music directors who provide precise instructions, Rahman allowed him to sing freely, a gesture that left the singer pleasantly surprised.

“He doesn’t have relationships in the traditional sense. Rahman doesn’t open up to people and remains focused on his work,” Sonu said. He added that while Rahman might be more open with old acquaintances from his past as Dileep, the singer has never witnessed him form personal bonds with colleagues.

During a USA tour with Rahman, Sonu observed the composer’s reserved demeanor. The two only exchanged polite greetings, as Rahman refrained from engaging in casual conversations or gossip. “This isn’t a drawback,” Nigam clarified, calling Rahman a “unique personality” who remains detached from unnecessary interactions.

Rahman, according to Sonu, is deeply respectful and avoids speaking ill of anyone. “He focuses solely on his work and prayers. He doesn’t hurt anyone or behave badly. He’s probably attached to his family, but with others, he keeps a professional distance,” he explained.

Nigam concluded by praising Rahman’s detached yet dignified approach to life. “He doesn’t let anyone get too close, and honestly, that’s how it should be,” he said, emphasising the composer’s singular dedication to his craft and values.
