As the repercussions of the Hema Committee Report began to become visible, a collective of 100 women has called for the resignation of actor-politician M Mukesh from both his legislative position as MLA and his role in the Film Policy Committee following recent sexual harassment allegations against him.
The joint statement, endorsed by notable cultural figures and activists such as writers KR Meera, VP Suhara, and Sara Joseph, along with activist K Ajitha, underscores a growing outcry over Mukesh's continued involvement in official capacities amidst these serious claims.
The Kerala police have charged Mukesh under sections 354 and 509 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertain to assault with the intent to outrage modesty and actions intended to insult a woman's modesty, respectively. This legal action came after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct were levelled against him. These include accusations of domestic violence, rape, and harassment in the workplace.
In their statement, the group of women criticised the inclusion of Mukesh in the film policy committee, given his ongoing legal troubles and the broader context of his allegations. The committee, which was established in 2023, is responsible for developing a new film policy in Kerala. It is chaired by Shaji N Karun, with Mini Antony as the convenor, and includes Mukesh among its members, alongside prominent actors and directors.
The fresh allegations against Mukesh have surfaced following the release of a redacted version of the Hema Committee report. This report highlights severe working conditions and prevalent sexual harassment issues within the Malayalam film industry.
Previously, Mukesh had faced accusations from a top casting director who alleged inappropriate behaviour several years ago, which he denied. More recently, additional claims have emerged, including demands for sexual favours in exchange for membership in the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), and inappropriate conduct towards a junior artiste's mother. His ex-wife, Saritha, has also accused him of abusive behaviour.
The women's group has warned that if Mukesh does not resign voluntarily, the government should take action to remove him from both his MLA position and his roles within the Film Policy Committee and the Film Conclave.
They have indicated that failure to act will likely result in substantial protests from women across Kerala.
