New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) informed that the wettest place in the country, Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, received record showers of 811.6 mm on Wednesday. The rainfall record, which ended at 8:30 am, is the highest in June since June 1955, PTI reported.
Further, the weather department reported that the area had recorded more than 750mm of rain on a day of June 10 times since the department started logging in weather reports.
The Meghalayan town in East Khasi Hills had recorded 1563.3 mm of rainfall on June 16, 1995, and a day before, the place received 930mm of rain.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon had advanced into more areas of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, the IMD reported.
The running spell of strong rainfall is expected to continue in the northeast and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkking for another five days.
"Under the influence of strong southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal in lower tropospheric levels and a trough in westerlies in middle tropospheric levels, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh on June 15; over Assam and Meghalaya on June 15-16 and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till June 17," the department said.
