Amazon India is reportedly set to make its debut in the quick commerce segment with a new service codenamed Tez.
Expected to roll out by late December or early 2025, Tez will initially focus on delivering groceries and daily essentials.
This move positions Amazon to compete with established quick delivery players such as Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart, as well as Flipkart’s recently launched service, Minutes.
According to sources cited by The Economic Times, Amazon initially planned to launch its quick commerce platform in the first quarter of 2025 but has expedited its timeline. To support this endeavor, the company is setting up dark stores, refining stock-keeping units (SKUs), and bolstering its logistics infrastructure.
“Quick commerce is currently a key area of focus for consumer internet platforms,” said an insider. “Amazon is aligning with the existing model, investing in dark stores and collaborating with logistics providers to ensure a seamless delivery experience.”
The details of the project, including its final name, are expected to be finalized during Amazon's monthly review meeting in December, just ahead of its annual Smbhav 2024 event on December 9-10.
India's quick commerce sector is witnessing rapid growth, fueled by high consumer demand for instant delivery. Amazon’s entry into this space could intensify competition as the e-commerce giant leverages its extensive logistics network and technological resources.
Reports suggest Amazon is actively recruiting employees and building partnerships with logistics providers to ensure the success of Tez. While the platform’s launch will start with essential goods, Amazon’s long-term strategy may expand into other product categories to capture a larger share of the quick commerce market.
