Amazon has announced an additional investment of $13 billion in India to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure, taking its total planned investment in the country to $48 billion between 2026 and 2030.
The announcement came after Amazon CEO Andy Jassy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Jassy said India has become an important market for the company's e-commerce, AI, cloud, and entertainment businesses.
The additional investment will expand Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centre capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad. The company said the expansion will provide startups, enterprises and government organisations with access to custom AI chips, managed AI services, cloud technologies and developer tools.
Jassy said Amazon's business priorities in India align with the country's goals of expanding access to AI, digitising small businesses, creating jobs and boosting exports.
Along with AI and cloud infrastructure, Amazon will continue investing in its e-commerce and quick commerce operations. The company plans to open more than 20 new fulfilment centres and over 100 new last-mile delivery stations this year, with a focus on improving deliveries in Tier 3 and Tier 4 cities.
Amazon also said part of its recently announced $300 million investment in operations and employee welfare will support its "Sammaan" programme for delivery associates. The initiative includes scholarships for associates' children, access to government welfare schemes, financial inclusion measures, insurance coverage, and road safety initiatives.
The company said its cumulative investments in India between 2010 and 2030 will exceed $88 billion. Since entering the Indian market, Amazon said it has digitised 12 million small businesses, enabled more than $20 billion in e-commerce exports, supported 2.8 million jobs and trained over 10 million people in cloud skills.
By 2030, the company aims to support 3.8 million jobs, facilitate $80 billion in cumulative exports, extend AI benefits to 15 million small businesses, and provide AI education to 4 million government school students.
