Only patriots can govern Hong Kong; China strengthens hold through stringent legislation

Beijing: The Hong Kong parliamentary committee, formed to implement China's policies, has implemented new regulations that have left the residents with fresh challenges. With the new legislation, the grip has intensified on Hong Kong, which has half-autonomy despite its affiliation to China.

One of the legislations is that only 'patriots' can govern Hong Kong. Critics accused this law of granting China sweeping power over Hong Kong, where pro-democracy protesters are on strike, calling for autonomy and freedom. The new law was ratified at the annual meeting of the ruling National People's Congress (NPC).

Hong Kong's constitution will be rewritten as per the new regulations, and revisions will be made in the fundamental laws and election method of Hong kong. Thus, the leaders who are deemed to be enemies of China will be kept away from the reign.

Dominique Rab, the British foreign minister, criticized Beijing as 'hollowing out the space for democratic debate in Hong Kong'.

As per the controversial law, the number of seats in the Hong Kong legislative assembly will be increased from 70 to 90. As of now, 35 members are representatives elected by people, and China nominates another 35 members. It is not sure whether the people will elect the newly added 20 seats or be representatives of China.

Additionally, a new panel will be formed to review the 'patriotism' of candidates in the election, which will consist of pro-Beijing people.
