Glasgow restaurant sparks backlash over flawed map of India on napkins

Glasgow: A popular Indian restaurant in Glasgow has drawn sharp criticism after serving visiting athletes from the Indian sports contingent using printed paper napkins featuring an incomplete map of India.

The controversy unfolded at 'Mister Singh's India – The Home of Curry', an iconic local establishment, following the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games. Olympic bronze medalist boxer Lovlina Borgohain publicly called out the restaurant after noticing that the map printed on the napkins completely omitted the entire northeastern region of India. Borgohain emphasized that every part of the country is vital and demands accurate representation. Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh strongly supported the star athlete, highlighting additional territorial errors on the napkins, including an incorrect depiction of Jammu and Kashmir, while demanding that the management immediately withdraw the napkins and rectify the design.

The eatery, a family-run establishment operating for over three decades that blends Punjabi heritage with Scottish influences, frequently hosts touring sports teams and dignitaries. Management has yet to issue an official statement addressing the oversight.

The incident marred an otherwise historic outing for the national delegation, as Indian boxers staged a record-breaking performance at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. The boxing squad secured a historic haul of ten medals, including seven gold medals—the country's highest-ever gold tally in the competition's boxing event. Preeti, Jaismine, Sakshi, Priya, Arundhati, Sachin Siwach, and Ankush Panghal secured gold, while Jadumani Singh, Lovlina Borgohain, and Narender earned silver medals to complete a dominant campaign.
