Fight breaks out between Israel military and Palestinian militants
text_fieldsGaza City: A day after Israel killed 15 people in the Palestinian territory by using air strikes, Gaza militants and Israel military traded cross-border fire on Wednesday.
The densely populated coastal territory was seen covered in smoke. Sirens warning of incoming fire were heard in the Tel Aviv area as well, reported AFP. A senior Israeli security official told the media that over 60 rockets were launched from Gaza. An AFP journalist said they saw dozens of rockets fired by Palestinian militants.
Israel said that it is targeting the rocket launching infrastructure held by Islamic Jihad militants. The site is in the city of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza. No casualties were reported in Tel Aviv.
A Gaza health ministry official said that one person was killed in the strikes and another was seriously wounded. "Everyone feels anxious and people aren't on the street much. I definitely feel like there's a war coming, and there's tension and fear, whether here or there (in Israel)," said a senior Palestinian.
Washington on Tuesday called on both Israel and Palestine to "de-escalate the situation". Egypt said that such actions from Israel can "inflame the situation in a way that could get out of control." Egypt has been a longtime mediator in Gaza.
