LG introduces advanced stretchable display with 50% expandability for versatile applications
text_fieldsLG Display has unveiled a cutting-edge stretchable screen that can expand by up to 50% of its original size, making it a breakthrough in flexible display technology.
Showcased at LG Science Park in Seoul, this 12-inch prototype screen stretches to 18 inches while maintaining high-resolution quality, demonstrating advancements that allow the display to deliver 100 pixels per inch (PPI) and a full RGB color spectrum.
This new model surpasses LG's previous stretchable display prototype from 2022, which allowed only a 20% expansion. The enhanced design was achieved through improvements in the silicon-based material similar to that used in contact lenses, alongside a newly engineered wiring structure.
The updated prototype also features a durable microLED light source, measuring 40 micrometers, enabling the display to be stretched over 10,000 times while retaining high image quality, even in extreme temperatures and conditions.
The free-form capabilities of LG’s stretchable screens make them adaptable to varied surfaces and shapes, lending themselves to a range of industries including fashion, wearables, and automotive technology. During the event, LG demonstrated the display’s potential uses, such as a curved automotive touch panel and a wearable display integrated into firefighter uniforms for real-time data updates.
LG's advancements suggest that stretchable displays could soon revolutionize applications across multiple fields, promising versatile and durable solutions for both personal and professional tech.
