Google unveils ‘Learn About’ – an AI tool for interactive learning
text_fieldsOn Monday, Google introduced a new experimental AI tool named “Learn About,” designed to enhance learning by providing users with visual, interactive responses.
Unlike Google’s Gemini or AI Overview tools, “Learn About” draws from educational sources and displays information through engaging visuals, articles, and videos.
This tool leverages Google's LearnLM language model, built specifically for educational purposes, rather than the Gemini models typically used.
Described as a “conversational learning companion,” the “Learn About” tool aims to support users in achieving their learning goals. Currently, it’s only accessible to select users in the United States, with broader availability yet to be announced. Google introduced the LearnLM model during its I/O event, emphasizing that it’s based on educational and research data and is optimized to mimic human learning patterns.
In tests comparing responses from “Learn About” and Gemini, The Verge noted that “Learn About” produced unique outputs, including educational images and contextual content, to offer a deeper exploration of the topics. This approach contrasts with Gemini’s more straightforward responses, which often quote sources like Wikipedia. Additionally, “Learn About” is designed to minimize the common AI issue of “hallucinations” by providing more reliable information.
The tool also includes interactive guides that break down complex topics into manageable sections, and it highlights common misconceptions to improve understanding. Alongside this release, Google has introduced a new Utilities extension for the Gemini app on Android, allowing the Gemini AI assistant to manage device functions such as setting alarms, adjusting volume, and controlling the camera.
“Learn About” reflects Google’s latest efforts to create an AI-powered educational experience, leveraging advanced technology to make learning more accessible, accurate, and engaging for users.
