The government has justified the Bill by citing Dr Rajendra Prasad's 24 January 1950 Constituent Assembly statement that Vande Mataram, despite objections from some religious minorities over certain verses, should enjoy equal honour with the National Anthem for its historic role in India's freedom struggle.
