The dispute arose after Sanjay Raj, then a student at Government Law College, Ernakulam, purchased a pair of Bata shoes on March 16, 2022, and was charged Rs 1,066 despite the printed MRP being Rs 999, with the store manager attributing the additional amount to revised tax applicable from January 1, 2022.
