India has formally entered the race to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games after the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) approved the bid during its special general meeting.

The deadline for submitting the proposal to the Commonwealth Games Federation is August 31.

Ahmedabad has been suggested as the host city, with the government agreeing to cover the entire cost, according to PTI.

Commonwealth Games Director Darren Hall recently visited the city to inspect facilities and hold discussions with the Gujarat government. A larger inspection team is expected to arrive later this month.

Following Canada’s withdrawal from the bidding process, India’s chances of securing the event have improved. The country last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010. The final decision on the 2030 host will be made by the General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport in late November in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Commonwealth Games, held every four years, bring together athletes from across the globe.

The next edition is set to take place in July 2026 in Glasgow.
