Congress MP Abdul Khaleque made the wildest goof-up imaginable claiming that Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi was born in Assam.
The lawmaker, representing the Barpeta constituency of Assam, quickly deleted the tweet without sticking to the claim.
The MP took to Twitter congratulating Messi on winning cup for Argentina at the World Cup.
Khaleque said "Congratulations from the core of my heart. We are proud of you for your Assam Connection" India Today reported.
When Twitter user Aditya Sharma asked the MP to explain more about Messi's Assam connection, he said the footballer was born in Assam.
After realising the folly, Khaleque quickly deleted the post.
But Netizens were rather quick enough to grab it and respond, with one user saying, " Yes sir, he was my classmate".
Another user jested with posting a picture of Messi that appeared like footballer commenting " I learnt today that I was born in Assam".
Some users compared Messi and Sachin Tendulkar saying that Argentine player also has a 'Maharashtra connection' like Tendulkar as they are both wearing the number 10 on their jerseys.
