Representational.

For the first time, the UN Security Council has passed a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

The resolution received unanimous support from all 14 Security Council members, with the United States abstaining from the vote, reported AFP.

The resolution, drafted in part by Algeria and supported by a diverse array of countries including Slovenia and Switzerland, calls for an immediate ceasefire during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. It emphasizes the need for a lasting and sustainable ceasefire, as well as the release of hostages seized during the conflict.

The United States, traditionally a staunch ally of Israel, has previously vetoed ceasefire resolutions but has shown increasing frustration with Israel's military campaign. Despite attempts to find a middle ground between supporting Israel and expressing concern over civilian casualties, the United States abstained from voting on this resolution.

Israel's military response to the October 7 attack by Hamas has resulted in a significant loss of life, with casualties predominantly being civilians, including women and children. The conflict has also led to the seizure of hostages by Hamas, further escalating tensions in the region.

While previous ceasefire resolutions have been passed by the Security Council, they have had limited impact on the ground, with Israel continuing to block aid convoys and concerns growing over the possibility of famine in Gaza.
