The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has announced the implementation of mandatory genetic testing for couples planning to marry, starting in January 2025. The initiative marks a significant step towards promoting sustainable wellness and improving the quality of life for Emirati families.

The comprehensive genetic test will analyze 570 genes associated with over 840 medical conditions. By identifying potential genetic mutations that could be passed to children, the initiative empowers couples to make informed decisions before marriage, contributing to healthier future generations.

This initiative aligns with the National Genome Strategy, which aims to create an integrated national genetic data system to detect genetic diseases and facilitate early medical intervention. The program is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Health and Prevention, the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi, Dubai Health Authority, Emirates Health Services Corporation and partner academic, medical, and technological institutions.

The decision to introduce mandatory genetic testing was made by the Emirates Genome Council during the annual UAE government meetings, reflecting the country’s efforts to leverage advanced healthcare measures to ensure long-term wellness for its citizens.
