UAE introduces first lab for developing new wheat varieties; 'Sharjah 1' to feature 19% protein content

The UAE is set to cultivate its own variety of wheat with the opening of the nation’s first biotechnology laboratory dedicated to wheat hybridization. Located on a farm in Sharjah, this innovative facility is equipped with advanced technology that enables researchers to measure plant growth and analyze genetic traits effectively.

The laboratory includes an experimental farm housing 550 different strains of non-GMO soft wheat. Researchers aim to identify the most suitable wheat varieties for the UAE’s unique climate conditions. A standout project from this initiative is the development of a new hybrid wheat named "Sharjah 1". This promising variety boasts an impressive protein content of 19%, making it the highest in the world, and is noted for its rapid growth rate.

Hybridization involves crossing two distinct varieties or species of plants to produce a new strain with desired characteristics. In the case of wheat, scientists are focused on creating hybrids that thrive in specific climates and offer enhanced nutritional value.

In addition to its research efforts, the lab employs innovative irrigation techniques to reduce water usage by 30%. This water-saving initiative is crucial for conservation in a region where water resources are limited. The facility utilizes scientific irrigation practices and a remote control application for pump management, improving monitoring capabilities and enabling efficient fault detection.

Ground sensors, installed at a depth of 60 cm, provide daily data on irrigation efficiency, while satellite technology facilitates comprehensive reports on farm operations, plant health, and weather forecasts. This combination of technology and research underscores the UAE’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and food security in the face of climate challenges.
