Dubai: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, in collaboration with UmbraCity, has launched a new service of sharing umbrellas with public transport commuters, aimed at improving the daily travel experience.

The collaboration between RTA and UmbraCity marks a significant milestone in Dubai's efforts to integrate smart solutions into its urban infrastructure. Through this partnership, Dubai aims to provide residents and visitors with convenient access to essential amenities while promoting sustainability and innovation.

The 'free of cost' smart umbrella service has been inaugurated at the Al Ghubaiba Bus and Metro station, catering to the needs of commuters during inclement weather conditions.

The primary purpose of this initiative is to enhance the walkability of Dubai, offering individuals protection from the sun and rain as they navigate the city's bustling streets. By providing access to shared umbrellas at key transport hubs, RTA aims to foster a more inclusive and accessible urban environment.

Aligned with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, the introduction of the smart umbrella-sharing service exemplifies Dubai's forward-thinking approach to urban development and its emphasis on enhancing the overall quality of life.

Through the integration of advanced technology, RTA and UmbraCity have revolutionised the concept of urban mobility. Smart umbrellas are equipped with innovative features, ensuring ease of use and accessibility for all commuters, further solidifying Dubai's reputation as a global leader in technological innovation.

Using their Nol card, commuters have the option to borrow umbrellas free of charge at a single location. This service is specifically tailored to assist Dubai in achieving its objective of creating a '20-minute city,' wherein residents can conveniently reach their daily target locations within a 20-minute walk or bike ride. This initiative aims to cultivate a stronger sense of community and enhance overall well-being.

Following a three-month trial period at the Al Ghubaiba station, RTA plans to expand the smart umbrella service to other metro and bus stations across Dubai.

Khaled Al Awadhi, Director, Transportation Systems at RTA’s Public Transport Agency said “By encouraging the use of smart umbrellas which are ‘Free of cost’ when leased using Nol card, RTA and UmbraCity are contributing to the creation of vibrant, healthy, and inclusive communities across Dubai. The service is introduced currently at Al Ghubaiba metro station for three months. On the evaluation of its success, RTA will consider expanding the service.”

The introduction of the smart umbrella-sharing service has received positive feedback from both residents and visitors. Commuters appreciate the convenience and practicality of the service, highlighting its contribution to their overall commuting experience.
