Jeddah Islamic Port to develop fourth terminal with SAR1.6bn investment, 2.6m-TEU annual capacity
text_fieldsRed Sea Gateway Terminal and French shipping group CMA CGM have signed an agreement to develop and operate the fourth container terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port, with investments of about SAR1.6 billion.
The Saudi Ports Authority, known as Mawani, announced the agreement, which was signed during the Saudi-French Investment Roundtable.
Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman and French President Emmanuel Macron attended the signing.
The project builds on the partnership between Mawani, Red Sea Gateway Terminal and CMA CGM.
It is intended to expand the capacity of Saudi ports, support the maritime and logistics sectors and strengthen the Kingdom’s links with global trade networks.
Annual capacity of 2.6 million TEUs
The fourth terminal will have an annual handling capacity of about 2.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units.
It will be developed under Red Sea Gateway Terminal’s existing concession agreement at Jeddah Islamic Port.
The additional capacity will help the port accommodate higher trade volumes and strengthen its position along international shipping routes.
Deep-water berths and new cranes
The development will include deep-water berths capable of receiving the latest generation of ultra-large container vessels.
Advanced operating technologies and 10 new ship-to-shore cranes will also be installed.
Mawani said the equipment and infrastructure will improve handling efficiency, productivity and service reliability while increasing the number of containers and vessels the port can accommodate.
Red Sea trade gateway
The expanded terminal is expected to help Jeddah Islamic Port attract more international shipping lines and services, increase cargo flows and improve connections with overseas markets.
The port is located on the Red Sea along maritime routes linking Asia, Europe and Africa.
Its expansion is intended to support the movement of imports and exports and improve the efficiency and resilience of supply chains.
Dedicated container terminal
The fourth terminal will be built next to Red Sea Gateway Terminal’s existing complex at Jeddah Islamic Port.
It will operate as a dedicated container-handling facility through the joint venture between RSGT and CMA CGM.
The facility will provide additional handling capacity and greater operational flexibility at the port.
The project forms part of continuing development at Jeddah Islamic Port, including the expansion of container terminals and upgrades to infrastructure, equipment and operating technologies.
The program also covers improvements to maritime and logistics services to prepare the port for future growth in global trade and supply chains.
Mawani said its partnerships with international terminal operators, shipping lines and other companies support the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030.
The authority said these projects are intended to strengthen the competitiveness of Saudi ports and the Kingdom’s position as a logistics hub connecting three continents.
