Haramain high-speed train raises Hajj capacity to 2.2m seats
text_fieldsRiyadh: Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) will run more than 5,300 trips on the Haramain High-Speed Train during the Hajj season, offering over 2.21 million seats for pilgrims.
The plan marks an increase of about 11 per cent in services compared to last year. During peak periods, up to 142 trips will operate daily to manage demand and ease movement between key cities.
The rail network connects Makkah and Madinah, passing through Jeddah stations, King Abdulaziz International Airport and King Abdullah Economic City. The 453-kilometre route can be covered in about two hours.
SAR has deployed 35 electric trains, each with a capacity of 417 passengers. The trains can reach speeds of up to 300 km/h, placing them among the fastest in operation.
The service is designed to reduce congestion at stations and provide a more organised travel option for pilgrims during the season.
Authorities said the system also supports lower carbon emissions and offers a safer alternative to road travel. The expansion is part of Saudi Arabia’s wider plans under Vision 2030 to improve transport services for pilgrims and visitors.
