Iran threatens attack on US forces if they enter Hormuz to escort stranded ships

US President Donald Trump’s announcement that the US would escort stranded vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, while claiming “very positive” discussions with Iran, has been rendered illusory after Iran warned that any American ingress into the waterway would invite direct military retaliation.
The declaration, unveiled as part of what Trump termed “Project Freedom”, was presented as a humanitarian gesture intended to extricate hundreds of commercial vessels reportedly stranded amid the ongoing blockade.
However, Iranian military authorities responded with severity, asserting that all maritime passage through the strait must remain under their sovereign coordination and that any unauthorised foreign military presence would be treated as an act of aggression.
Major General Ali Abdollahi, speaking through state broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, articulated the warning in categorical terms, emphasising that the US Armed Forces, if it sought to approach or penetrate the strait, would be targeted without hesitation.
The crisis unfolds against the backdrop of a fragile ceasefire reached on April 8 following the US-Israeli war against Iran, with negotiations between Washington and Tehran having since lapsed into deadlock, while Iran’s effective chokehold over the strait, through which a substantial proportion of global oil, gas, and fertiliser flows, has emerged as the principal fulcrum of contention.
While Trump maintained that discussions with Iran could culminate in a constructive outcome, he refrained from acknowledging Iran’s reported 14-point proposal aimed at reopening the waterway and dismantling reciprocal blockades, even as the United States Central Command outlined an expansive deployment involving guided-missile destroyers, aircraft, unmanned systems, and approximately 15,000 personnel to execute the escort operation.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations warned that the threat level in the strait remains critical, advising vessels to reroute through Omani waters, while European leaders, including Emmanuel Macron and Johann Wadephul, pressed for an immediate and coordinated reopening.
As the US intensifies what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as a sweeping economic stranglehold designed to incapacitate Iran’s’ fiscal machinery, the Revolutionary Guards have cast the impasse in starkly binary terms, contending that Trump now faces a choice between an unworkable military gambit and a diplomatically unpalatable accord.
