In a tragic incident, a pregnant woman and her husband were charred to death on Thursday after their car caught fire near the District Government hospital in Kannur.

Risha, 26, and her husband Prajith, 32, who was driving the Maruti S-Presso have been identified as Kuttiyatoor natives.

Of the six persons travelling in the car, four of them seated in the rear seat escaped after the onlookers alerted them and helped them get out of the car. The couple was unable to open the front doors failing to escape.

They were on their way to the local hospital for Risha’s routine check-up. The bystanders were shocked to witness the sight of the couple getting burnt alive right before their eyes.

Even though the Fire and Rescue Department officials reached the spot and doused the flames, they couldn’t save the couple.

The police after a preliminary investigation said that the car may have caught fire due to a short circuit and that they were awaiting the findings from the forensic officials inspecting the vehicle.
