Kannur, Kerala: Two CPI(M) members were arrested in connection with an attack on the home of a party member who supported rebel leader V Kunhikrishnan in Payyannur, police said on Sunday.

The suspects have been named as Sudheesh and Ajay Krishna, both DYFI office holders in Payyannur.

They were taken into custody on Saturday night following a detailed probe into the incident, police said.

The attack occurred early Friday morning at the house of T Purushothaman, a native of Mavicheri in Payyannur and police soon registered a case into the incident, officials said, PTI reported.

Purushothaman, a local party leader, is a close associate of Kunhikrishnan, who had defected from the CPI(M) after raising corruption allegations against party leaders and contested as an Independent candidate with UDF support in the Payyannur constituency.

The accused allegedly trespassed into the compound, set fire to a car parked on the premises, and smashed window panes by pelting stones, police said.

Following the conclusion of polling on Thursday evening, several incidents of violence were reported in the Payyannur constituency.

On Saturday, the Additional District Magistrate convened an all-party meeting, where it was decided that those involved in the attacks would be arrested at the earliest.

Political parties also assured that they would refrain from provocative activities and avoid violence.

The Kerala Assembly polls were held on April 9, and the results will be announced on May 4.
