Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand: For marrying an upper caste woman, the in-laws of a Dalit man killed him in Uttarakhand's Almora district, PTI reports citing an official.

On Friday, the man, identified as Jagdish Chandra, also a Dalit political activist from Panuadhokhan village, was found dead in a car in Bhikiasain town, Salt sub-division tehsildar Nisha Rani informed.

Rani said that Jagdish's wife's mother, her step-father and her step-brother were caught while taking the body in the car to dispose of it and were immediately arrested. The couple got married on August 21, and the man got kidnapped by the in-laws on Thursday, Rani said.

Uttarakhand Parivartan Party leader PC Tiwari said the couple wrote to the administration seeking security on August 27. The man had contested elections from the Salt assembly seat twice on the party's symbol. If the administration had acted on the couple's complaint, the man could have been saved, Tiwari said.

He said that the incident was a matter of shame for Uttarakhand. He demanded Rs 1 crore compensation for the victim's wife.
