Udit Narayan’s first wife alleges mistreatment; demands maintenance
text_fieldsSinger Udit Narayan is once again in the spotlight amid fresh controversy. Months after facing criticism online for kissing female audience members during a concert, he is now confronting serious allegations from his first wife, Ranjana, who has accused him of mistreatment.
The Bihar-based woman has alleged that he stopped paying her maintenance and that his family arranged for her uterus to be removed under the pretext of medical treatment.
In a police complaint, Ranjana said she married Udit on December 7, 1984. She claimed that after he moved to Mumbai the following year to pursue a music career, he never returned home. Udit later rose to fame with the songs of the 1988 film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, directed by Mansoor Khan and starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, Indian Express reported.
Ranjana alleged that she later discovered Udit had married another woman, Deepa, in Mumbai, and that the couple had a son, singer Aditya Narayan. She claimed that whenever she confronted him, he dismissed her concerns and misled her.
According to a report by Deccan Herald, she further alleged that in 1996, Udit and his brothers, Sanjay Kumar Jha and Lalit Narayan Jha, took her to a private hospital in Delhi, where her uterus was removed without her knowledge or consent under the guise of treatment. She said Deepa Narayan was also present at the hospital. Ranjana maintained that she only discovered the surgery much later during subsequent medical consultations.
She also accused Udit and Deepa of verbally abusing her and preventing her from entering their Mumbai residence when she visited in 2006. Additionally, she alleged that her in-laws in Nepal insulted her and forced her to leave their home. Since then, she has been residing at her parental home in Sapaul.
Ranjana had earlier approached the Family Court in Sapaul and the Women’s Commission, where, she said, Udit acknowledged that he remains legally married to her and promised to provide maintenance. However, alleging that he failed to honour this commitment, she has now filed a complaint at the Women’s Police Station in Sapaul. She said her decision to approach the police was also influenced by her discovery that her uterus had been removed.
Speaking to Bihar Tak, Ranjana said she felt compelled to seek police intervention because, despite repeated assurances, Udit had not fulfilled his promises. She expressed faith in the Women’s Police Station and said she hoped to receive justice.
She added that she has been unwell and requires his support, which she claims he has not provided. Ranjana said she seeks the respect due to a wife, noting that while Udit has acknowledged her as his first wife, he has not met the responsibilities she associates with that status.
Her lawyer alleged that she had suffered significant harm and said that it was during medical treatment that doctors informed her about the removal of her uterus. According to the lawyer, this revelation led her to believe that she had been misled, prompting her to finally approach the police.
